How to drink nectar

Have you ever drunk the nectar which gives ever-increasing bliss and never makes one satiated?  Have you ever heard about the nectar whose single drop provides an unlimited ambrosial pleasure? Have you ever read about the nectar whose fragmental portion of a drop grants immortality?

This kind of pure nectar is the most palatable substance and an object of craving for everyone. Unfortunately, many don't have information about how to get this. However, bonafide spiritual teachers mercifully revealed the source of this pure nectar through the light of the Holy Scriptures. The source is the process of chanting and hearing Krishna's holy name.

There are many Holy names of Krishna, and one can chant any one of the names. However, for the current age which is Kali-yuga, scriptures recommend “Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare / Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare” as a mahamantra for everyone. Moreover, the process is also very simple - one has to chant the mahamantra loud enough to hear oneself attentively.

All the revealed scriptures staunchly recommend this process of obtaining nectar, which puts an end to all kinds of miseries in this world, including death. Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu inaugurated this Hare Krishna movement through which He magnanimously distributed the nectar without considering any qualification.

Srila Rupa Goswami says, "I do not know how much nectar the two syllables 'Krish-na' have produced. When the holy name of Krishna is chanted, it appears to dance within the mouth. We then desire many, many mouths. When that name enters the holes of the ears, we desire many millions of ears. And when the holy name dances in the courtyard of the heart, it conquers the activities of the mind, and therefore all the senses become inert."

In the initial stages, one cannot experience this taste of nectar because of contaminated heart. Srila Rupa Goswami explains the reason as follows. "The holy name, character, pastimes, and activities of Krishna are all transcendentally sweet like sugar candy. Although the tongue of one afflicted by the jaundice of avidyā [ignorance] cannot taste anything sweet, it is wonderful that simply by carefully chanting these sweet names every day, a natural relish awakens within his tongue, and his disease is gradually destroyed at the root."

Our ignorance about spiritual identity due to the contaminated heart is compared here as jaundice. Srila Prabhupada explains, "There is the example given of the jaundice patient. He is suffering from disease, and when given sugar-candy, which is the cure, he finds it very bitter and distasteful. But, that does not mean the sugar-candy is not very sweet or delicious; it is simply due to his diseased condition that it seems bitter. In order to be cured from his disease, he must take the medicine of sugar-candy, despite the apparently bitter taste, and as he becomes cured, the real sweet taste of the candy is gradually revealed. Similarly, we are diseased, and only if we take to this chanting process may we be cured. Maya may put so many doubts and worthless arguments into our minds, but if we continue the chanting, the curing process will go on, never mind the doubts, and gradually we will get a taste of that sweet nectar of Krishna Nama Sankirtan."

Drinking the nectar of the holy name of Lord Krishna is the special gift given by Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu to the fallen souls of Kali-yuga. This facility is not available even to the greatest demigods up to Lord Brahma. To understand this magnanimity of Lord Chaitanya's Hare Krishna Movement, which is readily accessible to humanity is beyond human abilities. Nonetheless, a sincere practitioner quickly realizes the simple truth.

Therefore, one has to take up the process of chanting and hearing the Hare Krishna mahamantra very earnestly. This process not only enables one to cross all the miseries of life but also helps one to taste the ambrosial nectar, which is impossible to attain by other means. Every intelligent person must seriously engage in this practice to make one's life successful.
