The missing link in the Modern Education

The missing link in the Modern Education
By Param Dhama Dasa

75% is the literacy of India, and every year, 3.57 crores students are graduated. Similar stats can be found across the globe in various countries.  In comparison to the stats of 75 years before, there is a tremendous & miraculous achievement, and people take pride in it because we are more educated than ever before. However, there is a missing-link which is not making the students of modern education a complete individual. This article gives a right perspective to see that missing-link through the light of real knowledge.

Crores of graduates are produced every year from thousands of universities across the globe. A student in this modern educational system invests at least 21-24 years of life in receiving graduation, 25-30 years for Ph.D., 30-35 years for postdoctoral. Even after spending so many years in education, the person is not guaranteed to possess all good qualities with a trustworthy character. As University education focuses only on making its student potent enough to earn a livelihood, it becomes an individual responsibility to build oneself with all the excellent human qualities in non-academic hours. Because of this difficulty, we find a shortage of human beings who possess all worthy attributes. There is no single university across the globe, which imbibes exceptional characteristics like truthfulness, controlled mind & senses, peace, honesty, self-control, and reliability in its students' personality along with the completion of education.

In the current humanity, most of the major crimes, illegal activities, high-end corruption are committed by educated professionals, politicians, not by illiterates. Moreover, these criminals tactfully utilize all their intelligence for escaping the vigilance of government. This scenario is found across the globe.

As per Vedic education, to make one a perfect individual by imbibing qualities like truthfulness, self-control, peace, honesty, ethics, kindness, trustworthiness, is the primary necessity of education. Teaching how to earn a livelihood is a secondary necessity. As long as this pattern of training is not given to a student of an educational institution, we can’t expect society free from crimes.

Now a question may arise, how to execute the primary and secondary necessities of education? The answer is teaching spirituality, the missing link in modern education. Spirituality must be taught from pre-school to postdoctoral students as the primary necessity. By merely practicing spirituality under the direction of a bona fide teacher, one can transform oneself into a perfect person. A bona fide spiritual practices naturally bring all exalted qualities in an individual; this is the verdict of Vedic wisdom. This solution is not a new one, but the most ancient one, and is called Vedic education. Many foreigner scholars praised Vedic education as well as Vedic civilization, which was built on Vedic education.

Lord Macaulay, British scholar: "I have traveled across the length & breadth of India. I have not seen one person who is a beggar, who is a thief such wealth I have seen this country, such high more values, people of such caliber, this made possible by their ancient educational system."

Mark Twain, American writer - "India is the cradle of the human race, the birthplace of human speech, the mother of history, the grandmother of legend, and the great-grandmother of tradition. Our most valuable and most instructive materials in the history of man are treasured up in India only."

We can find many this kind of appreciations. However, now it is not possible to replace the entire educational system; instead, we can teach spirituality as the primary necessity to all class of students. It is said in Kali-Santarana Upanishad, "In this age, after searching through all the Vedas one cannot find a better method of practicing spirituality other than chanting the holy names of Lord Krishna." One can find similar statements throughout the Vedic literature, propounding the importance of chanting Krishna's name in this modern age for counteracting all faults.

Across the globe, His Divine Grace A.C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada introduced this spirituality, chanting Hare Krishna Mahamantra, and brought a magnificent transformation in practitioners. Chanting the holy name of Lord destroy all the unwanted elements from individual to humanity; this is thoroughly declared in Vedas and practically proven by Swami Prabhupada through Hare Krishna Movement. Srila Prabhupada says “The holy name of Krishna is potent everywhere at all times and in all circumstances; therefore one should always chant the holy names of Lord.”

Therefore, one shouldn’t wait for the changes in the modern educational system. One should immediately start practicing this simple spiritual process of chanting Hare Krishna Mahamantra and educate everyone, including one’s dependents, family members, and friends in this direction. By sincerely taking this instruction, one can not only make one’s life complete & successful but also everyone’s.
